Moses

Who was Moses in the Bible?

Some people just can’t seem to stay out of trouble. When ever a conflict breaks out, they always manage to be nearby and reaction is their favorite action. This was Moses. He seemed drawn to what needed to be righted. Throughout Moses’s life he was at his finest and worst responding to conflicts around him. Even the burning bush experience was an illustration of his character. Having spotted the fire and seeing that the bush itself was not burning he needed to investigate. Jumping into a fight to defend a Hebrew slave or trying to referee a struggle between two kinsmen, Moses was ready to react.

Over the years an interesting thing happened to Moses. He didn’t stop reacting, however he learned to react correctly. Leading two million people in the desert was more than enough challenge for Moses. Most of the time he served as a buffer between God and the people. One moment he had to respond to God’s anger at the people’s stubbornness and forgetfulness. At another moment he had to react to the people’s bickering and complaining. And on top of that he had to react to attacks on his character.

Leadership involves reaction. To react with instincts consistent with God’s will, we have to develop habits of obedience to God. This usually happens best during times of stress. By leaning on God for our answers, we find that when stress comes, our natural action will be to obey God.

In our times of lowering moral standards, we find it hard to believe that God would punish Moses for the one time he disobeyed outright. This caused Moses by disqualifying him to enter the promised land. We need to note that even though he was punished God did not reject Moses. Personal greatness does not make a person immune to error or its consequences.

In Moses we see an outstanding personality shaped by God. But don’t misunderstand what God did. God did not change who or what Moses was. He did not give Moses new abilities and strengths. Instead He took Moses and his characteristics and molded them until they were suited for God’s purpose. Knowing this should make a difference in your understanding of God and His purpose in your life. God is trying to take what He created, (you) in the first place and use it for His intended purpose. Don’t ask God what you should change into, but how to use your abilities and strengths to do His will.

Have you asked God to use your abilities and strengths for His purpose? Do you know God? Do you know Jesus?

Are you certain that you are going to heaven? If the answer is no or your not really sure and there is something stirring inside you at this very moment to do this, then all you have to do is say a small prayer and you can be assured of your name being added to the Book of Life. Go to the prayer of salvation and pray the words out loud and believe in your heart and you will be saved.

Moses’s story is told in the books of Exodus through Deuteronomy. He is also mentioned in Acts 7:20 – 44 and Hebrews 11:23 – 29
