What Every New Believer Needs To Know
Author: Ed Krusiewig
Congratulations on your decision to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior. This was the most important decision of your life, and we are so happy that you made the right one. Rest assured that you now will be in heaven for eternity with Him after your life here on earth ends.
But it doesn't stop there; in fact it's only the beginning of your new life in Christ. For some of us things change immediately, for others change takes place over a period of time. God is now your guide, and He will direct your path from this point on, as He sees fit for your individual situation, since He knows you better than you even know yourself.
Beware of the enemy!
Not everyone is excited about your decision. In fact there is one who is going to do everything in his power to disrupt your newfound life. And his name is Satan. Satan cannot reverse your decision in Christ, he cannot take away your salvation and he no longer has any control over your life. Satan's only weapon against you is deception. Just as he did with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, he will simply try to confuse you in hopes of disrupting your newfound faith. He may use others around you to cast a doubt, or he may simply place a thought in your mind that will get you to wonder if it's really true.
Don't believe everything you hear, even from a pastor. Look it up in the Bible for conformation. What you hear should do one of two things. It should confirm something that you were thinking about, or it should lead you to the Bible for further study and conformation of the truth.
(Proverbs 30:5) Every word of God is flawless; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.
God's Word is your strength!
When Jesus was in the desert for forty days and tempted by Satan, He did not puff Satan off to never never land. Jesus used God's word to get Satan to leave, (Matthew 40:4 -11). The Bible is God's word; use it as your main line of defense against Satan's attacks. The truth can never be disputed, and God's word is the truth, given to us in the Bible. Read it and learn what is right and what is wrong. It will be your strength in fighting off any and all doubts or fears.
Milk to Meat!
When a baby is born they do not sit down to a steak dinner. They start on milk, and as they grow they start eating more solid foods. In exactly the same way, a new believer will start with the little things and grow into more knowledge and strength.
Hook Up and Hang Out!
One of the greatest struggles you will encounter is that when you leave the sanctuary of the church and return to the madness of the outside world, the battle begins. If a friend led you to the Lord, you now have someone that you can hook up with and spend some quality time with. This will strengthen you and help to keep you on the correct path. If you found a church and were led to the Lord through the words given by the pastor, it's important that you make a new friend in that church. Find someone that you feel compatible with that is strong in his or her walk with the Lord, then hook up and hang out together. Attend Bible studies at the church, attend prayer meetings, and of course go to church on Sunday. The deeper you get into God's word the easier your walk and understanding will be.
Remember you are no longer alone!
You now have fellow brothers and sisters here to help you in your walk with the Lord. And most importantly, you now have Jesus. You are now forgiven for your sins of the past, present and future.
When doubts come - turn to the Bible!
When trials come - turn to the Bible!
Your new brothers and sisters are here to help, but you need to ask. It's not easy at times to open up, but the best way to eliminate a problem is to expose it.
May God richly bless and keep you safe.
