Reuben

Who was Reuben in the Bible?

Parents are usually the best judge of their children’s character. Jacob summarized his son Reuben by comparing him to water. Only when water is frozen does it have a shape of its own. Water always shapes itself to the container it is in, or in Reuben’s case his environment. Reuben usually had good intentions, but he seemed unable to stand against a crowd. Reuben’s instability mad him hard to trust. He had both public and private values which contradicted each other. Reuben went along with his brothers actions, when they sold Joseph to the slave merchants. Although his conviction was to counteract this in private, his plan failed when he compromised by going along with it. Compromise has a way of destroying convictions. Without convictions, lack of direction will destroy life. After this Reuben’s sleeping with his father’s concubine (one of his wives) showed how little of the integrity was left that he displayed earlier in his life.

How consistent is your public and private life? Even though we want to think they are completely separate, they in fact affect each other. Do you do things in private that you speak against in public? Character is what you do when no one is watching. Only you can truly answer this question. I really believe that you can lie to others but the truth is you can not lie to yourself. You can try to convince yourself, but you cannot lie to yourself. Allowing God to guide you through your life will set you on the right path to a full and rewarding life.

Do you allow God to guide you through your life? Do you know God? Do you know Jesus?

Are you certain that you are going to heaven? If the answer is no or your not really sure and there is something stirring inside you at this very moment to do this, then all you have to do is say a small prayer and you can be assured of your name being added to the Book of Life. Go to the prayer of salvation and pray the words out loud and believe in your heart and you will be saved.

Reuben’s story is told in Genesis 29 – 50
